Abstract

The article discusses the establishment of the Escuela Nacional de Terapia Ocupacional, in Argentina. Emphasizing issues of social construction, the article examines the conditions of emergence of the profession, among which highlights the severe polio epidemic that swept the country in 1956.  Within the framework of the sociology of professions, the historiography and gender, the article looks at historical aspects of the professionalization process.  The main conclusions indicate the persistence, in the present, a majority of women who choose this profession, traces the origins of the current professional identity and the need to promote qualitative research on the issue.
